Aisha K. Ayensu
Ghana
2008
Biography
In 2008, Christie Brown catapulted herself into Ghana’s fashion industry at the brand’s very first runway show in Accra, Ghana. Founder Aisha Obuobi Ayensu was engrossed in fashion from an early age: her seamstress grandmother created vibrant garments out of traditional Ghanaian textiles that serve as the chief point of inspiration for her line, one that’s now known for its bold designs and prints that capture her personal artistic expression and cultural heritage.
Christie Brown offers an uncompromising vision of the modern West African woman: she’s relentlessly strong, feminine and creates her own rules. Traditional prints feature heavily within the label’s apparel—which ranges from bespoke gowns to statement-making ready-to-wear pieces and innovative accessories, all inspired by West African culture and art.
The label and its designer have garnered significant international attention: besides Ayensu being named one of Forbes’ 30 Most Promising African Entrepreneurs in 2016, she is also a two time winner in the African Designer of the Year category at Ghana’s Glitz Style Awards (in 2018 and 2019). Since its launch, Christie Brown has received the acclaim of international fashion magazines from Harpers Bazaar to Vogue Italia and continues to make waves on the West African fashion scene with its inspired offering of sophisticated and wearable designs.
