Biography

Founded in 1998 by Folake Coker, Nigerian fashion label Tiffany Amber is known for its rich aesthetic and wholly West African feel. Although Coker was born in Nigeria, she was educated in Switzerland, England and Scotland, eventually graduating with a Masters in Petroleum Law. Despite her formal training, the designer was drawn to fashion, and ultimately decided to create Tiffany Amber, a clothing brand that has since become iconic in its country of origin. Since its inception, the brand has worked to empower artisans from the African continent through vast employment opportunities.

Today, Tiffany Amber (an imagined name thought up at the time of its founding to appeal to a Western market) is considered a household name in Nigeria, and can count four brick-and-mortar stores across Lagos and Abuja. Coker has shown her collections across Africa, and the major fashion cities in Europe and the U.S, even making history as the first Africa-based designer to show twice at New York Fashion Week. She was the first recipient of the Designer of the Year award at African Fashion Week in Johannesburg in 2009, and won the award for Fashion Brand of the Year at Arise Fashion Week in 2012. The brand has also received the recognition of prestigious fashion titles, including WWD, Vogue and Vanity Fair, and the high acclaim of former Vogue International Editor-at-Large, Suzy Menkes.
