Biography

Ajabeng is a Ghanaian unisex clothing brand founded in 2018 by Travis Obeng-Casper. Guided by what the designer has termed an “Afro-minimalist” aesthetic, his collections of experimental yet distinctly minimalist pieces convey a reverence for tradition and a flair for innovation. Through his offerings of suit-style tailoring, oversized button-downs, and wide-leg trousers, his work imparts a subtle merging of the masculine and the feminine, inspired by traditional African womenswear, Accra’s streetwear scene, and the bold geometry of art deco architecture.

Inspired by his mother’s eclectic retro fashion sense as well as the flamboyance and drama of traditional African womenswear, Obeng-Casper also displays a dedication to building a more sustainable fashion ecosystem, a commitment that is emphasized by his prioritization of fair employment practices and focus on the use of biodegradable materials in his work.

In 2020, Ajabeng made its runway debut at Arise Fashion Week to notable acclaim. There, the brand placed in the top eight of the inaugural 30 Under 30 competition alongside names like Kenneth Ize and Mmuso Maxwell. Ajabeng has since gone on to collaborate with acclaimed African creatives such as stylist Daniel Obasi and photographer Stephen Tayo.
